Rijeka Gateway Terminal Full Operation

Croatia’s Largest Private Logistics Investment Begins Commercial Service

Rijeka Gateway, which is described as the most modern and technologically advanced container terminal in the Adriatic, has officially entered full commercial operations. This operational start followed the granting of the Occupancy Permit and was immediately preceded by two significant milestones: the arrival of its first commercial vessel and the entry of its first truck the week prior.

The terminal represents Croatia’s largest private logistics investment, a €380 million joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Group. Phase one of the facility includes 400 meters of quay and a 20-meter depth, offering an initial annual capacity of 650,000 TEU, with future expansion plans targeting capacity beyond one million TEU.

Operational and Strategic Significance

The first commercial vessel to arrive was the Al Jasrah, a 368-meter-long ship sailing from Port Said, Egypt, on the Asia–Europe route. This arrival also strategically positions Rijeka within the Gemini Cooperation between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, establishing the terminal as a key component of one of the world’s most important shipping networks.

Rijeka Gateway is equipped with advanced cranes, automation, and renewable energy systems designed to set new standards for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. To strengthen regional connectivity and sustainability, plans are in place for up to 60% of cargo to move by rail. The terminal currently employs over 250 people, who completed more than 50,000 hours of training in preparation for operations, with the workforce expected to grow to 300 employees soon. The facility’s new headquarters are located in Warehouse 22 within the Metropolis complex, which was restored to combine historic preservation with modern, seismically safe design.

Peter Corfitsen, CEO of Rijeka Gateway, commented, “This terminal is more than just infrastructure. It is a symbol of Rijeka as a modern, sustainable and technologically advanced port that creates value and drives both the local and national economies.”
