Barry Callebaut Group and A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) have officially inaugurated one of the largest cocoa bean warehouses in the Asia Pacific region, located in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. The facility is the product of a strategic Built-To-Suit development, following a long-term partnership agreement signed in 2023 between the world’s leading chocolate and cocoa product manufacturer and the global logistics integrator.
Purpose-built for the storage and handling of cocoa beans, the warehouse spans over 600,000 square feet and features a multi-storey ramp-up design, marking a first for the Pasir Gudang area. With a storage capacity of nearly 40,000 metric tonnes, the site strengthens Barry Callebaut’s regional supply chain network and reinforces Maersk’s footprint in value-added contract logistics.
The facility is equipped with Maersk’s latest Warehouse Management System, offering real-time inventory visibility, process optimisation, and enhanced supply chain control. Energy-efficient technologies, including LED lighting and natural ventilation, have also been integrated to support sustainable operations and reduce energy consumption.
According to Datuk Dr. Ramle Hj Kasin, Director General of the Malaysian Cocoa Board, the facility aligns with the national agenda to enhance Malaysia’s status as a global cocoa hub. “It is to sustain our momentum, boost competitiveness, and reinforce Malaysia’s stature on the global cocoa map,” said Dr. Ramle.
Strategically located just one kilometre from Barry Callebaut’s cocoa processing plant and near the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, the warehouse will act as a critical hub for cocoa beans imported from Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The facility will serve customers across Asia and beyond, playing a pivotal role in both regional and global supply chains.
“This facility is a game-changer for our supply chain in Asia Pacific,” said Mr. Alain Freymond, President, Global Cocoa at Barry Callebaut. “It gives us greater control over bean quality and enhances our ability to serve customers with speed and precision. Our partnership with Maersk continues to grow, and this warehouse reflects our shared commitment to a resilient, future-ready logistics network.”
Maersk has supported Barry Callebaut’s logistics operations since 2022, integrating ocean freight and inland transport services to connect cocoa-growing origins with Asian processing sites. In Malaysia, cocoa beans are shipped via the Port of Tanjung Pelepas and transported to the warehouse by road.
Commenting on the opening, Mr. Ditlev Blicher, President, Asia Pacific at Maersk, stated: “Our end-to-end logistics solutions are designed to give Barry Callebaut full supply chain visibility and flexibility. This enables them to respond faster to market needs and deliver outstanding service across their network. We are proud to support their continued success.”
The official opening ceremony was attended by senior leaders from Barry Callebaut and Maersk, alongside government stakeholders and industry partners. The event reaffirmed both companies’ commitment to sustainable logistics, innovation, and regional supply chain growth in Asia Pacific.
