A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has officially taken delivery of the Tangier Maersk, the first of six mid-size container vessels designed to bridge the gap between regional feeders and ultra-large ocean carriers. Built by the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, the vessel was delivered three months ahead of schedule, marking a significant step in Maersk’s journey toward a net-zero fleet.
The Tangier Maersk is part of a strategic fleet renewal aimed at enhancing flexibility across Maersk’s global network while strictly adhering to the company’s ambitious decarbonization targets.
Versatility Meets Sustainability
The new series features a capacity of 9,000 TEU, a “sweet spot” in modern maritime logistics that allows the vessels to transit both the Neopanamax locks of the Panama Canal and access smaller, draught-restricted ports that cannot accommodate 15,000+ TEU ships.
Key Technical Features:
- Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine: Like the pioneering Ane Maersk, the Tangier Maersk is equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on green methanol, significantly reducing CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions.
- Optimized Design: The vessel’s hull and bow design have been refined for maximum fuel efficiency, even when operating at varying speeds.
- Fleet Roadmap: Four more sister ships are scheduled for delivery later in 2026, with the final vessel arriving in early 2027.
- Strategic Deployment: Connecting East Asia and the US Gulf
On its maiden voyage, the Tangier Maersk will call at Shanghai before entering service on Maersk’s TP15 route. This specific service is a critical artery for global trade, connecting major East Asian manufacturing hubs with the US Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, emphasized that this series is vital for maintaining long-term competitiveness. By deploying methanol-enabled ships on the TP15 service, Maersk allows North American importers to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their transpacific supply chains.
Accelerating the Net-Zero Transition
The early delivery of the Tangier Maersk underscores the accelerating pace of the maritime energy transition. As global shippers increasingly demand “green corridors,” Maersk’s investment in mid-size, dual-fuel tonnage provides the operational agility needed to navigate evolving environmental regulations and fluctuating market demands.
