"K" Line LNG-Fueled Car Carrier TETHYS HIGHWAY

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” Line) has taken delivery of the TETHYS HIGHWAY, a new car carrier powered primarily by liquefied natural gas (LNG). Built by SHIN KURUSHIMA TOYOHASHI SHIPBUILDING CO., LTD., the vessel was delivered on July 18 and has a capacity of 6,900 vehicles.

The TETHYS HIGHWAY’s delivery is a step toward “K” Line’s environmental goals, as LNG fuel is expected to significantly reduce emissions. Compared to conventional vessels using heavy fuel oil, the new carrier is projected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by 25% to 30% and virtually eliminate sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions.

Advancing “K” Line’s Environmental Vision

The vessel’s introduction is part of “K” Line’s “Environmental Vision 2050 -Blue Seas for the Future-.” This strategy outlines a commitment to improve CO₂ emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030, a target that surpasses the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 40% goal. The company’s long-term vision is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The TETHYS HIGHWAY was named in a ceremony by Mr. Tsuguo Fukumura, Senior Executive Officer of the shipper, Isuzu Motors Limited. The name, derived from a sea goddess in Greek mythology, symbolizes the company’s focus on sustainable maritime operations.
