Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a Skill Development Programme for the port sector. This strategic collaboration is with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL), aligning with the Government of India’s “Skill India Programme.”

Program Objectives and Features

The initiative aims to empower local communities, enhance employability, and promote greater diversity within the port operations sector. It underscores a deep commitment to diversity and inclusion while producing a job-ready workforce, supporting the employment generation goals announced in the Union Budget 2025.

Organized at the GTI premises, the program will provide vocational training and technical expertise specifically tailored to the port sector. This includes equipping individuals with job-ready skills in areas such as Safety, Maintenance, Planning, and Equipment Operations, through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical, on-the-job training. Key highlights include inclusive training methodologies, specific diversity initiatives, and apprenticeships offering stipends or compensation.

The core objectives of this program are to:

  • Educate and train individuals impacted by port development projects (PAP).
  • Provide industry-aligned, high-quality training to promising candidates.
  • Significantly enhance the participation and engagement of women in port operations.
  • Actively promote greater diversity across the port industry.

Leadership Perspectives

Shri Unmesh Wagh, Chairman of JNPA, congratulated GTI, emphasizing the program’s crucial role in providing opportunities for the local community and demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. He expressed pride in the partnership’s potential to uplift the socio-economic status of the local community and foster a more representative workforce.

Jon Goldner, Managing Director Asia & Middle East APM Terminals, highlighted APM Terminals’ commitment to creating future-ready jobs and opportunities globally. He stated that upskilling and training are core to their value proposition, and this program in India underlines that commitment, strengthening communities, driving sustainable growth, and building a more inclusive and resilient port sector.

Sunay Mukerjee, COO, Gateway Terminals India, affirmed that the MoU signing is the beginning of a significant initiative. He stressed GTI’s commitment to enhancing opportunities, creating a more skilled workforce for India’s growing port sector, and bringing greater diversity to port operations, believing this collaboration will make a real difference and contribute to a vibrant and inclusive industry.
