DP World 36-Hour Dubai–Iraq Maritime Bridge

New RoRo Service Between Mina Rashid and Umm Qasr Cuts Costs and Border Delays

Following its official inauguration last month, DP World has successfully operationalized its new 36-hour maritime link connecting Dubai’s Mina Rashid with Iraq’s Umm Qasr Port. The service, operated by the dedicated RoRo vessel DP World Express, offers a high-speed alternative to traditional overland trucking, which often faces complex border formalities and unpredictable transit times.

The DP World Express, which recently underwent extensive technical upgrades at Drydocks World, is specifically designed to carry up to 145 accompanied trailers per sailing. This unique “accompanied” model allows drivers to travel on board with their vehicles, ensuring a secure and seamless door-to-door solution between the UAE and Iraq.

Streamlining Regional Trade and Connectivity

The new service addresses a significant market demand for faster, more controlled cargo movements in the Middle East. By shifting trailers from the road to the sea, DP World provides several strategic advantages:

  • Predictability: A fixed 36-hour transit time allows businesses to plan supply chains with higher confidence.
  • Reduced Complexity: The maritime bridge bypasses multiple land-border crossings, reducing handling requirements and administrative delays.
  • Extended Reach: Beyond Iraq’s commercial centers, the service facilitates efficient onward transit to Jordan and Syria via established inland corridors.
  • Two-Way Flow: The vessel supports regional exports by carrying Iraqi goods back to the UAE on its return leg.

Strategic Impact and Sustainability

H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, noted that this maritime bridge is essential for helping trade flow across the Middle East while supporting long-term economic opportunities for both nations. From a sustainability perspective, the service also contributes to lower carbon emissions compared to long-haul heavy trucking across regional deserts.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director of DP World GCC, highlighted that the shift to accompanied trailers reflects a clear move toward more reliable cross-border movement. This service integrates into DP World’s wider logistics ecosystem, offering non-containerized cargo shippers the same level of efficiency usually reserved for containerized trade.
