DP World, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and transport technology company Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a pilot project for autonomous magnetic rail freight in India. The initiative will utilize Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology to automate and electrify cargo movement within the DPA terminal at Kandla, Gujarat.
The partnership marks a significant step toward modernizing India’s logistics infrastructure, aligning with the country’s National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti agenda. The pilot, a first of its kind in India, will test the self-propelled movement of rail-based cargo within a live port environment.

Advancing Sustainable and Efficient Logistics
The MoU establishes a framework for a 750-meter pilot project at Deendayal Port to evaluate the MagRail technology’s feasibility. The system is designed to enable autonomous, electric-powered wagons to operate on existing rail tracks using linear motor technology. This is expected to enhance capacity, efficiency, and speed for both containerized and bulk cargo while reducing costs and CO₂ emissions.
Shri Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of the Deendayal Port Authority, stated that the collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure that will support growing cargo demands.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman & CEO of DP World, added that piloting solutions like MagRail aligns with DP World’s focus on future-proofing its terminals and enhancing the speed, efficiency, and sustainability of its logistics operations. The project aims to improve yard efficiency and reduce the reliance on diesel vehicles for short-haul cargo transfers.
