DHL Supply Chain has signed a long-term contract with Fortum Battery Recycling, a business of the Nordic energy company Fortum. The agreement outlines a collaboration to develop and provide specialized logistics solutions for the recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, establishing a new standard for the circular economy in e-mobility. The partnership is a strategic move to promote sustainable supply chains and resource conservation across Europe.

End-to-End Solutions for a Circular Economy

Fortum Battery Recycling is recognized as a leader in Europe for its comprehensive approach to the battery recycling value chain, offering a solution for every stage of the process. The company has pioneered processes to efficiently recover valuable raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel with minimal waste.

Under the new contract, DHL Supply Chain will be responsible for a full suite of service logistics, including the safe transportation, storage, and handling of used EV batteries. This will ensure their timely delivery to Fortum’s recycling facilities, enabling the company’s recycling processes to run smoothly and efficiently. This specialized logistics support is a crucial component of Fortum’s mission to maximize resource conservation and foster a circular economy in Europe.

According to Hendrik Venter, CEO of DHL Supply Chain EMEA, the collaboration with Fortum highlights DHL’s commitment to providing innovative logistics solutions for the growing demands of e-mobility. The partnership is expected to help Fortum scale its recycling capabilities while adhering to the highest safety and sustainability standards.

Anssi Airas, Head of Business Line Battery at Fortum, emphasized that the electrification of Europe is dependent on sustainable battery recycling within the continent. He stated that the cooperation with DHL is an essential part of Fortum’s strategy to expand its recycling solutions and contribute to a more environmentally friendly EV market.
