DHL Global Forwarding is teaming up with the renowned Swiss chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli to minimize greenhouse gas emissions associated with ocean freight transport. The collaboration marks a significant step forward in sustainability, as Lindt & Sprüngli has relied on DHL Global Forwarding for logistics since 2008. Starting in 2024, the partnership will utilize DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, aligning both companies with their commitment to science-based climate targets and their shared goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

In just three months, Lindt & Sprüngli has already experienced a notable reduction in its carbon footprint, cutting approximately 514.86 metric tons of CO2e emissions. This number is anticipated to reach around 4,800 tons by the end of 2024. DHL Global Forwarding’s innovative use of biofuels derived from waste and residues achieves an average emission reduction of 80% at the source. The company also employs a “book and claim” approach, where ocean carriers utilize these sustainable fuels on behalf of DHL Global Forwarding, allowing the resulting emissions reductions to be allocated to the shippers through certificates.

Casper Ellerbaek, Global Head of Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, stated, “Lindt & Sprüngli and DHL Global Forwarding share not only a longstanding partnership but also a commitment to science-based targets. Our climate goals are confirmed by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and we are thrilled to support Lindt & Sprüngli in achieving their emission reduction targets with our transportation expertise.”

Lindt & Sprüngli sources its chocolate products from various European countries, including Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and Austria, distributing them to global destinations such as the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa. The company is dedicated to maintaining high-quality standards in chocolate production while actively pursuing its sustainability goals.

With DHL Global Forwarding’s GoGreen Plus service, Lindt & Sprüngli benefits from a comprehensive logistics solution that ensures a seamless and environmentally friendly supply chain. The focus on full container load (FCL) shipments, transported in 40-foot reefer containers, guarantees that the quality of Lindt & Sprüngli’s products will be preserved throughout their journey.
