GoGreen Plus Service to Cut Emissions for Majority of Henkel’s Ocean Freight by 4,700 Metric Tons of CO2e in 2025
DHL Global Forwarding and Henkel are escalating their long-standing sustainability partnership with a new, multi-volume agreement focused on the large-scale use of Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF). This expansion, formalized with the use of DHL’s GoGreen Plus service for the majority of Henkel’s ocean freight, is a significant step in their joint commitment to decarbonizing supply chains.
The agreement covers approximately 9,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of ocean freight to be transported with GoGreen Plus in 2025. The utilization of SMF, which is a waste- and residues-based maritime fuel, is projected to reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 4,700 metric tons of CO2e well-to-wake. This reduction is equivalent to approximately an 85 percent drop in greenhouse gases on the main haul compared to using conventional marine fuel, with the emission reductions verified by the independent certification body, SGS.
The Book & Claim Mechanism
The partnership leverages the Book & Claim approach, an integral part of the GoGreen Plus service. This mechanism enables DHL to directly replace fossil fuels with sustainable fuels within its network and then allocate the resulting environmental benefits to paying customers, like Henkel. This allows Henkel to reduce its indirect Scope 3 emissions arising from upstream and downstream transportation, even if its specific shipments are not physically transported on the vessels using the SMF.
Amanda Rasmussen, Chief Commercial Officer at DHL Global Forwarding, highlighted the immediate impact, saying, “By combining Henkel’s ambitious climate strategy with our sustainable logistics solutions, we are demonstrating that progress toward decarbonizing supply chains is possible today.”
Ondrej Slezacek, Global Category Manager Sea & Air Freight at Henkel, added that working with DHL on sustainable transport is a crucial part of the company’s strategy to reduce emissions and helps accelerate the overall transition to low-emission logistics across the industry.
The initiative builds on a successful 2024 pilot project between the two companies, with the substantial expansion in 2025 demonstrating a shared determination to advance logistics decarbonization. By making large-scale use of SMF, DHL and Henkel are helping to strengthen the market for sustainable fuels and address existing availability constraints.
