CMA CGM Green Fleet Naming Dual-Fuel Methanol Vessel

CMA CGM ANTIGONE to Support Asia–Mediterranean Trade on BEX2 Service

CMA CGM has officially named its latest sustainable addition to the fleet, the CMA CGM ANTIGONE. The naming ceremony marks a significant progression in the Group’s multi-fuel strategy and its commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The CMA CGM ANTIGONE is powered by dual-fuel methanol technology, a key pillar in the Group’s energy transition. The vessel will be under the command of Captain Zhang Zequan, with the traditional role of Godmother performed by Harriet Wu, the former CFO of CMA CGM China.

Strategic Deployment on the BEX2 Service

The new vessel is slated for deployment on the BEX2 service, a critical maritime artery that links major manufacturing hubs in Asia with the Middle East and the Mediterranean. By integrating high-capacity, low-emission vessels into this route, CMA CGM is enhancing the sustainability of global supply chains without compromising on transit speed.

Key features of the deployment include:

  • Sustainable Propulsion: Significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuel oil.
  • Regional Connectivity: Strengthened trade links between the Far East and Mediterranean ports.
  • Fleet Modernization: Part of a broader orderbook that includes several methanol-powered vessels ranging from 9,000 to 15,000 TEU.

Advancing Sustainable Global Trade

The launch of the CMA CGM ANTIGONE underscores the Group’s proactive approach to decarbonization. Methanol is increasingly viewed as a viable “green” fuel for the shipping industry, particularly as the availability of biomethanol and e-methanol scales up globally.

CMA CGM continues to invest heavily in its “Better Ways” initiative, ensuring that newbuilds like the Antigone are equipped with the latest aerodynamic and engine optimizations to maximize efficiency. This milestone reflects the company’s broader mission to lead the maritime industry toward a more environmentally responsible future.
