Hapag-Lloyd Second ZEMBA Tender Win E-Methanol 2027

Global Alliance of Retail Giants Commits to 120,000 Tonnes of CO2e Abatement

Hapag-Lloyd has been selected as a winner of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) second tender, marking its second consecutive victory with the non-profit group. Under this agreement, Hapag-Lloyd will provide hydrogen-derived e-methanol shipping services to over 45 global cargo owners, including Amazon, IKEA, Nike, and Patagonia, starting in 2027.

The deal facilitates a collective commitment to abate at least 120,000 metric tons of CO2e over a minimum three-year period. Hapag-Lloyd will contribute the majority of this volume, deploying its large methanol dual-fuel containerships on a major trans-oceanic trade lane.

Advancing Next-Generation E-Fuels

While Hapag-Lloyd’s inaugural ZEMBA win in 2024 focused on waste-based biomethane, this second tender specifically targets e-fuels—synthetic fuels produced via electrolytic hydrogen.

  • 90% Emission Reduction: The e-methanol will be produced using low-carbon hydrogen and renewable energy, delivering a carbon intensity reduction of at least 90% on a lifecycle basis compared to conventional marine fuels.
  • Book-and-Claim Integration: The partnership utilizes a transparent “book-and-claim” chain of custody system, allowing ZEMBA members to claim these emissions reductions toward their Scope 3 targets, regardless of where the specific vessels are physically sailing.
  • Scalable Technology: By aggregating demand from the world’s largest retailers, ZEMBA aims to lower the cost of e-fuels through economies of scale, much like the trajectory of renewable electricity.

A Milestone for Net-Zero 2045

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, noted that sourcing scalable e-fuels remains a major industry challenge and that this tender win is an essential step toward the company’s goal of net-zero fleet operations by 2045.

The agreement follows Hapag-Lloyd’s recent order of eight 4,500 TEU methanol-powered vessels and a major offtake agreement with Goldwind for 250,000 metric tons of green methanol annually. By securing early commercial demand through ZEMBA, Hapag-Lloyd is de-risking its transition to next-generation fuels while providing cargo owners with verified, high-impact decarbonization solutions.
