CMA CGM Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics Key UK Rail Player

Strategic Acquisition Strengthens Intermodal Services and Accelerates Decarbonization Efforts in the United Kingdom

The CMA CGM Group, a global player in sea, land, air, and logistics solutions, has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics, a leading rail freight operator in the United Kingdom. This transaction encompasses the rail and road operations, inland terminals, and the Freightliner brand within the UK intermodal segment. The deal is expected to close in early 2026, subject to required regulatory approvals.

Boosting Intermodal and Decarbonization

This acquisition underscores CMA CGM’s ambition to build a sustainable and competitive transport offering in Europe. By adding a long-standing name in UK rail freight, the Group reaffirms its commitment to supporting the modal shift from road to rail, which is a key lever in reducing CO₂ emissions and a cornerstone of decarbonizing global supply chains .

Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, stated that the acquisition “strengthens our intermodal presence in the United Kingdom, a strategic market for CMA CGM. It enables us to connect sea, rail and road more efficiently, delivering better solutions for our customers,” and is a concrete step in expanding lower-carbon transport options.

Operational Structure and Synergies

Following the transaction, Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics will remain a multi-user, multi-customer standalone operator. It will be run independently with its existing teams while benefiting from CMA CGM’s global support and coverage in logistics and shipping. Importantly, other Freightliner businesses—Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding, and Freightliner Poland/Germany—will remain under existing ownership.

The addition of Freightliner opens the way to significant enhanced-value offerings, including:

  • Developing comprehensive intermodal offerings that combine maritime, rail, and road expertise.
  • Enhancing connectivity between Europe’s major ports and the UK hinterland through strategically located inland terminals.
  • Driving shared innovation in decarbonized logistics solutions.

Tim Shoveller, Chief Executive Officer of Freightliner Group, commented that the transaction marks an “exciting new chapter” for the Intermodal business, allowing it to focus on its distinct market as a stand-alone business within CMA CGM’s portfolio.
