APM Terminals, a leading global terminal operator and part of the A.P. Moller – Maersk Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a global leader in energy storage and battery innovation. The agreement, formalised in early June 2025, aims to accelerate the energy transition within the global logistics and terminals industry by advancing the adoption of battery-electric container handling solutions.
The signing ceremony took place in Ningde and was represented by Mr. Grant Morrison, Head of Global Asset Category Management at APM Terminals, and Mr. Akin Li, Executive President of CATL’s Overseas Car Business. The event was witnessed by senior leadership from both companies, including procurement and commercial strategy teams from Shanghai and Mumbai.
Pushing Forward the Electrification of Terminals
The collaboration builds on an existing partnership between the two organisations and aligns with their shared commitment under the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA). Co-founded by APM Terminals and several industry players, ZEPA seeks to accelerate the global decarbonisation of terminal operations by promoting scalable zero-emission solutions.
“We’re happy to extend our strong partnership with CATL through this strategic agreement, which supports our aim to decarbonise terminal operations with battery-electric container handling equipment,” said Mr. Morrison.
CATL will supply advanced battery technologies and integrated system solutions tailored for APM Terminals’ electric port equipment—including electric terminal tractors and other handling vehicles. These solutions are designed to deliver high performance, reliability, and lower lifecycle emissions.
“Our collaboration is not just about electrification—it’s about creating long-term, system-wide value,” added Mr. Li. “Together, we aim to develop and deploy next-generation solutions that help the port industry transition to a more sustainable future.”
Supporting Scope 3 and Lifecycle Decarbonisation
Looking ahead, the partnership extends beyond equipment electrification. CATL will provide full lifecycle support for its battery systems, including development, after-sales service, and end-of-life recycling. Best practices for energy efficiency and emissions reduction will be shared with APM Terminals to support its Scope 3 decarbonisation goals—covering emissions across the value chain.
This collaboration reinforces APM Terminals’ broader ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, in line with Maersk Group’s sustainability goals. The terminal operator currently manages more than 60 operational sites globally and is deploying renewable-powered battery-electric equipment across its network, coupled with operational strategies such as shorter dwell times and energy-efficient buildings.
Driving Innovation Through Collaboration
Both parties have expressed a commitment to ongoing innovation, market development, and resource sharing. By combining CATL’s energy storage expertise with APM Terminals’ global reach and operational insight, the partnership is expected to produce scalable, replicable models for clean logistics infrastructure.
As ports around the world face increasing pressure to decarbonise, this alliance represents a major step toward realising greener, smarter terminal operations that align with the broader global push toward sustainable trade.
