Taiwan-based ocean carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. (Yang Ming) celebrated a major milestone in its fleet modernization program with the naming ceremony of its third 15,500 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container vessel, the YM Wayfinder. Held at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) shipyard in Ulsan, the event marks the continued expansion of Yang Ming’s energy-efficient, low-carbon fleet aimed at meeting international maritime decarbonization targets.
Mrs. Wei-Nung Kao, spouse of Yang Ming’s Chairman, Mr. Feng-Ming Tsai, officially named the vessel as its ceremonial Godmother. The ship is scheduled to enter active commercial rotation on July 1, 2026, joining its operational sister ships, the YM Willpower and YM Worthiness.
Advanced Engineering and Fleet Decarbonization Milestones
Constructed by HD HHI, the YM Wayfinder features a length overall (LOA) of 364.97 meters, a breadth of 51 meters, and a nominal carrying capacity of approximately 15,600 TEU. Designed to operate interchangeably on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and traditional low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), the series is equipped with state-of-the-art high-pressure dual-fuel main engines.
The deployment of these LNG-powered assets delivers immediate environmental and operational advantages:
- Immediate Carbon Mitigation: Operating primarily on LNG allows the vessel series to immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20% compared to conventional fuel oil.
- Proven Emission Reductions: The first two sister ships in the series have already bunkered more than 11,158 metric tons of LNG in active service, translating to a reduction of up to 12,532 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
- Alignment with Net-Zero 2050: As the first container line in Taiwan to deploy LNG dual-fuel technology, Yang Ming’s investments serve as a primary pillar in its strategy to align with global net-zero emissions targets by 2050.
Strengthening the Asia-North Europe FE3 Service Corridor
The YM Wayfinder will be immediately deployed on the high-volume Asia-North Europe FE3 service, a major trade lane for international retail and industrial supply chains. The vessel’s ultra-large capacity allows Yang Ming to maximize slot utilization, lower unit operating costs, and ensure consistent schedule reliability for shippers moving goods between East Asia and Western Europe.
The optimized port rotation for the FE3 service links key manufacturing and consumer hubs across East Asia and Northern Europe:
FE3 Service Port Rotation: Qingdao – Ningbo – Yantian – Singapore – Felixstowe – Antwerp – Hamburg
By integrating the YM Wayfinder into this fixed weekly rotation, Yang Ming strengthens its service network competitiveness while providing cargo owners with a verified low-carbon transport option to help them meet their scope 3 environmental sustainability goals.
