Thailand’s Ministry of Transport is working closely with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) to implement new traffic management systems and support the long-term infrastructure timeline at Laem Chabang Port. The collaborative initiatives were reviewed by Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Sanpetch Boonyamanee, during an official operational site visit and field inspection on 5 June 2026.
The ministerial delegation was welcomed by Sub Lt. Rutthakorn Khiewpaisal, Deputy Director of Financial Management and Corporate Strategy and Acting Director of the PAT, alongside the Governor of Chonburi Province, Mr. Naris Niramaiwong, and senior port executive teams.
Managing Record-Breaking Container Volumes
Laem Chabang Port, which firmly ranks among the world’s top 20 busiest container gateways, continues to see strong economic activity. Over the past year, the port handled a record-breaking 10.15 million TEUs, reflecting Thailand’s robust international trade growth.
This high volume of cargo brought more than 413,000 container trucks into the terminal facilities over the past month alone. To ensure this steady rise in trade does not impact local logistics costs or regional air quality, the Ministry of Transport is introducing proactive measures to streamline truck movements and improve overall efficiency.
Three-Tier Operational Framework Introduced
To support the port’s high operational throughput, the Ministry of Transport has outlined a structured, three-tiered strategy in coordination with intermodal stakeholders:
- Immediate Staging Solutions: The PAT is establishing a dedicated 50-acre buffer zone to comfortably hold incoming trucks before they enter the terminals. This space will keep public highways clear and maintain a steady, organized flow of traffic into the gates.
- Coordinated Processing Standards: A new joint traffic-solution committee—uniting terminal operators, business stakeholders, the Customs Department, the Department of Highways, the Department of Rural Roads, local government, and police—will manage on-site logistics in real time. Main gates will target a steady processing rate of at least 50 trucks per hour, with backup lanes ready to open during peak delivery windows.
- Long-Term Infrastructure Upgrades: A forward-looking Master Plan will optimize internal space and traffic layouts, supported by updated tariff structures to encourage prompt container pickups. Additionally, the ministry plans to significantly expand eco-friendly rail freight, aiming to route at least 50% of cargo between the Lat Krabang Inland Container Depot (ICD) and the port via rail.
Keeping Phase 3 Expansion Moving Forward
During the site inspection, Sub Lt. Rutthakorn provided an update on the landmark Laem Chabang Port Phase 3 Development Project. While initial land reclamation and site handover steps have encountered minor technical limitations that put the project slightly behind schedule, the PAT has deployed a clear plan to resolve these hurdles.
A strict timeline has been set to finalize these technical details by July 2026, keeping the major deep-water expansion project securely on track for its scheduled opening in 2031. The official visit concluded with positive discussions focused on upgrading port labor welfare, boosting staff morale, and enhancing the overall quality of life for the workforce and the surrounding Chonburi community.
