Taiwanese container carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. (Yang Ming) has been honored with the Sapphire Award at the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies program ceremony held in Oakland, California. This award is the highest level of recognition granted by the program, which is led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) alongside a coalition of government agencies, marine sanctuaries, and environmental non-profits.

The distinction acknowledges vessel operators that maintain strict voluntary speed restrictions along the United States West Coast to shield endangered marine life from ship strikes and reduce heavy commercial shipping emissions. The achievement marks a major milestone for Yang Ming, representing the fifth time overall and the fourth consecutive year that the carrier has secured the top-tier Sapphire status. Mr. Andy Lin, Senior Manager of Marine Operations of Yang Ming (America) Corp., accepted the trophy on behalf of the company.

Voluntarily Restricting Speed in Critical Transit Zones

Since 2016, Yang Ming has actively aligned its fleet operations with the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies initiatives. The company’s captains voluntarily reduce vessel transit speeds to 10 knots or less when navigating through highly sensitive marine ecosystems off the coast of California. These designated slow-steaming zones encompass major maritime corridors including the San Francisco Bay Area, Monterey Bay, and the coastal waters of Southern California.

The targeted speed reductions are designed to directly prevent fatal hull collisions with migrating blue, fin, and humpback whales, which frequently feed in these nutrient-rich shipping lanes. Beyond mitigating physical strike risks, lowering vessel speeds significantly dampens underwater noise pollution, preventing the disruption of marine mammal communication networks and reducing stress on localized whale populations.

Tangible Environmental Benefits for Coastal Communities

The benefits of the slow-steaming program extend above the waterline as well. Operating large container ships at lower speeds alters the fuel burn rate, resulting in an immediate and measurable drop in localized greenhouse gas emissions.

By systematically slowing down its fleet near the coast, Yang Ming has successfully lowered its output of harmful air pollutants, specifically nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx). This reduction in exhaust emissions directly enhances ambient air quality, providing substantial public health benefits for heavily populated coastal port communities situated near major maritime choke points.

Embedding Ocean Conservation into Long-Term Strategy

Driven by a corporate commitment to biodiversity protection, Yang Ming has integrated the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, Life Below Water, as a foundational pillar of its broader global sustainability strategy. The carrier continuously implements these conservation practices across its daily routing schedules while simultaneously building internal environmental awareness among its seafaring crews and shoreside staff via specialized training and volunteer modules.

The ongoing validation from NOAA confirms that Yang Ming’s operational adjustments are delivering verifiable, high-value ecological outcomes. Looking ahead through the 2026 shipping season, the container line remains dedicated to balancing efficient regional trade workflows with proactive conservation measures, ensuring that its global supply chain operations do not compromise vital marine habitats.
