CEVA Logistics Lenovo Advance Green Trade China–Kazakhstan Electric Truck Pilot

CEVA Logistics and Lenovo have announced the successful completion of a landmark long-haul electric truck trial along the China–Kazakhstan corridor. The eight-day pilot, which concluded in late April, demonstrated the viability of utilizing heavy-duty electric vehicles (EVs) for high-speed, cross-border logistics, resulting in a significant 46% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional all-diesel routes.

The trial marks a major step forward in establishing low-carbon transport corridors between China and Central Asia, proving that sustainable technology can meet the rigorous demands of long-distance ground freight.

Efficiency Across 6,000 Kilometers

The pilot involved transporting 5.3 tons of cargo from Shenzhen to Almaty, Kazakhstan. To maximize environmental impact while ensuring operational feasibility, the journey was split into two distinct legs:

  • Domestic Leg (China): A pure-electric heavy-duty truck covered the 5,000-kilometer stretch from Shenzhen to Alashankou in just 4.5 days. This rapid transit was made possible by nine strategic charging stops.
  • International Leg (Kazakhstan): Upon reaching the border, the cargo was seamlessly transitioned to a diesel fleet for the final leg to Almaty, maintaining the schedule where EV charging infrastructure is still developing.

Streamlined Customs and End-to-End Visibility

A critical factor in the pilot’s success was the integration of CEVA’s Alashankou International Road Transport (TIR) Center. The facility handled all cross-border and customs procedures, ensuring the electric-to-diesel hand-off occurred without administrative delays.

To ensure the safety of Lenovo’s high-value technology products, the entire journey was supported by:

  • GPS Tracking: Continuous location data across nearly 6,000 km.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Live oversight of every critical milestone to provide full supply chain visibility.

A Collaborative Path to Net Zero

The partnership highlights the importance of collaboration between logistics providers and technology leaders to achieve ambitious sustainability goals.

Kelvin Tang, APAC Ground & Rail Leader at CEVA Logistics, noted that the project supports the CMA CGM Group’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. Similarly, Golden Xing, Global Logistics Operations Director at Lenovo, emphasized that the successful trial provides an innovative blueprint for Lenovo to meet its Science-Based Targets for 2030 and 2050.

By synchronizing domestic electric trucking with rapid customs brokerage and international fleet hand-offs, CEVA and Lenovo have successfully demonstrated a scalable, resilient, and low-carbon solution for one of the world’s most vital emerging trade routes.
