Bahrain APM Terminals Collaboration Khalifa Bin Salman Port

The Kingdom of Bahrain and APM Terminals have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to deepen their collaboration at Khalifa Bin Salman Port. The LOI outlines plans to more than double the terminal’s throughput by 2030, expand trade flows with Saudi Arabia, and invest in new growth segments that align with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030.

“This signing is a significant step in further strengthening Bahrain’s economy in line with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030,” said His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications. “By utilizing Bahrain’s strategic location — particularly its direct links to Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf states — Bahrain is well positioned as a major regional center for trade distribution.”

Key Objectives of the Collaboration

  • Increased Throughput: Aim to more than double the terminal’s throughput by 2030.
  • Expanded Trade Flows: Enhance trade connections with Saudi Arabia.
  • Investment in Growth Segments: Support Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 through strategic investments.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Achieve net-zero operations by 2040, with Khalifa Bin Salman Port leading the way.
  • Solar Power Project: Meet 100% of the terminal’s energy needs through an 11.5-megawatt solar power project.
  • Talent Development: Upskill local talent and create future-proof employment opportunities.
  • Ship Recycling Ecosystem: Create a responsible ship recycling ecosystem with re-exporting of the recycled steel via the port.

“This event marks an important next step for our collaboration and how we can leverage our unique capabilities from both APM Terminals and A. P. Moller – Maersk,” said Jon Goldner, Chief Executive Officer, Asia and Middle East of APM Terminals.

Matthew Luckhurst, Managing Director of APM Terminals in Bahrain, emphasized the commitment to net-zero operations and the role of the solar power project.

APM Terminals Bahrain currently supports more than 500 direct jobs and is committed to developing local talent through training and collaboration with academic institutions.
