MEDLOG, the logistics division of MSC, has announced the commencement of construction for a cutting-edge cold storage facility in Savannah, Georgia. The new facility, spanning an impressive 291,000 square feet, is set to significantly bolster the export capabilities of poultry, pork, and meat producers in the U.S. Southeast and Midwest.
The state-of-the-art cold storage facility will offer approximately 20,000 freezer/cooler pallet positions to the local market and has been engineered to handle up to three million pounds of blast freezing per day. This capability will enable producers to efficiently transport raw products to the facility for blast freezing, facilitating direct export to overseas markets in South America and Asia.
Equipped to accommodate both frozen and chilled cargo, the facility will feature 42 loading docks and has been specifically designed to accommodate rail cargo, granting producers from as far as the U.S. Midwest access to global markets.
This substantial investment in Georgia by MEDLOG is expected to yield significant benefits for The Port of Savannah, the third busiest container terminal in the U.S. The development is anticipated to contribute to the port’s future growth and create over 100 new job opportunities for the local community.
Speaking on MSC’s latest investment in the United States, MSC USA President & CEO Fabio Santucci stated, “This latest investment in the state of Georgia is another example of how MSC continues to expand the global reach of U.S. exporters and importers by enhancing landside capacity. We’ve designed this cold storage facility with the necessary specifications to enable trade opportunities for businesses as far inland as the Midwest. MSC has been serving U.S. businesses nationwide since 1985, and this facility allows us to further strengthen that decades-long partnership.”
MEDLOG’s Savannah cold storage has been designed to ensure a reduced carbon footprint. The facility will feature a 1.5-megawatt rooftop solar array capable of supplying approximately 10% of the facility’s power. It will also be the first cold storage facility in the United States to achieve BREEAM™ certification, an international alternative to LEED™. The MEDLOG cold storage facility aims to be operational around mid-2025.
