TotalEnergies and the CMA CGM Group have entered into an agreement to create a 50/50 joint venture focused on providing liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering services in the Port of Rotterdam. The strategic partnership is subject to applicable regulatory approvals.
Under the agreement, a new 20,000 cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel will be positioned in Rotterdam by the end of 2028 and jointly operated. The venture will offer a complete logistics service, from a reload facility at Gate terminal to direct LNG delivery to vessels in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. The partnership will also leverage the infrastructure of TotalEnergies, which has been operating its own LNG bunker vessel, the Gas Agility, in the region since 2020.
Advancing Maritime Decarbonization
TotalEnergies has also committed to supplying CMA CGM with up to 360,000 tons of LNG annually from 2028 through 2040. This supply will support CMA CGM’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon by 2050 and facilitate the growth of its dual-fuel LNG-powered fleet, which is expected to reach 123 vessels by 2029.
According to Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, the partnership reinforces their shared commitment to supporting the energy transition in the shipping sector. Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, stated that the joint venture is a concrete step toward scaling up alternative fuels and accelerating the decarbonization of global trade.
