New Quay Crane and Electric RTGCs Enhance Efficiency and Advance Terminal Decarbonization in Gujarat

DP World has expanded the capabilities at the Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) in Gujarat with the arrival of a new state-of-the-art Quay Crane and three new electric Rubber-Tyre Gantry Cranes (e-RTGCs). These investments simultaneously enhance the terminal’s operational capacity and accelerate its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Enhanced Capacity and Efficiency

The new Quay Crane, which is capable of handling vessels 22 rows across, allows Mundra to service some of the world’s largest container ships with greater efficiency and reliability. Its advanced features include predictive maintenance planning, wider CCTV coverage for enhanced operator awareness, and energy-efficient drive systems, all of which improve safety, precision, and productivity.

With this addition, DP World Mundra now operates eight quay cranes, boosting its capability to deliver faster vessel turnarounds and enhancing service consistency. This expansion is projected to raise the terminal’s overall handling capacity to 1.56 million TEUs by 2027.

Decarbonization and Green Initiatives

The simultaneous deployment of the three new e-RTGCs expands the terminal’s fleet to 31 units. This investment is expected to cut the terminal’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 18.9% and significantly reduce noise levels, aligning with its sustainability goals.

The electrification efforts support India’s Harit Sagar (green port) guidelines, which call for 50% electrification of port equipment by 2030 and 90% by 2047 at major ports. DP World is accelerating electrification across its Mundra operations with electric light motor vehicles (E-LMVs), forklifts, and upcoming electric internal transfer vehicles (e-ITVs).

The terminal’s commitment to sustainability is further demonstrated by its ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification from the National Productivity Council (NPC) of India and its practice of sourcing renewable power through International Renewable Energy Certificates (IRECs). These local initiatives contribute to DP World’s global commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2050.

Ravinder Johal, Chief Operating Officer – Ports & Terminals, Operations & Commercial, Middle East, North Africa & India Subcontinent, DP World, stated that these upgrades reinforce Gujarat’s role as a vital trade gateway and support India’s ambition to be a global leader in sustainable trade.
