DP World, a prominent global supply chain provider, has taken a significant step in its decarbonization strategy by deploying five new electric internal transfer vehicles (eITVs) at its operations within Laem Chabang International Terminal (LCIT). This move is a key component of the company’s commitment to achieving greener logistics.
Decarbonization Goals and Impact
The initial batch of eITVs is projected to reduce the terminal’s carbon emissions by approximately 60% compared to the diesel-powered ITVs currently in use. This deployment supports the broader goal of completing the full conversion of LCIT’s ITV fleet to electric power by 2030. This full transition is expected to decrease the terminal’s overall carbon footprint by around 12%, relative to the 2022 baseline emissions.
These efforts are aligned with the Port Authority of Thailand’s (PAT) Green Port Strategy, which aims to transform Laem Chabang Port into a green port by 2030. LCIT is also furthering its environmental goals with on-site solar generation projects already underway at its Container Freight Station (CFS) warehouse and other locations within the terminal. Collectively, these strategic steps are designed to minimize environmental impact while strengthening LCIT’s long-term competitiveness and sustainability.
Glen Hilton, CEO & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, DP World, noted that the deployment of the eITVs marked a “critical milestone in our decarbonisation journey, demonstrating that operational excellence and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.”
Operational Efficiency and Global Strategy
Beyond the environmental benefits, the new eITVs are also expected to enhance operational efficiency. They will facilitate faster container transport between vessels and the yard, leading to improved vessel turnaround times and better overall terminal efficiency.
DP World has successfully implemented similar electrification initiatives across its global portfolio, including at the Port of Brisbane in Australia and Manila South Harbour in the Philippines. These initiatives underscore DP World’s global commitment to sustainability and its mission to decarbonize port operations worldwide.
