APM Terminals Elizabeth Port Modernization Major Electric Equipment Orders

APM Terminals Elizabeth has entered into procurement agreements for 96 electric terminal tractors from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tired gantry (E-RTG) cranes from Konecranes to support its ongoing terminal modernization program at the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The major equipment investments aim to expand yard capacity, enhance operational reliability, and prepare terminal infrastructure for future cargo growth across North America’s East Coast.

Equipment Fleet Expansion and Operational Scope

The total 130-unit equipment acquisition integrates zero-emission, high-capacity machinery directly into daily container handling operations:

  • Electric Terminal Tractors: Order encompasses 96 Class 8 battery-electric HUSK-e XP terminal trucks manufactured by Orange EV. Each unit features a 310-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack and a combined gross vehicle weight rating of 180,000 lbs for heavy-duty yard haulage.
  • Electric RTG Cranes: Features 34 battery-powered E-RTGs from Konecranes, with an option for six additional units. The cranes operate entirely on onboard battery packs, replacing conventional diesel engines for yard container stacking. Deliveries are scheduled to run through 2028.
  • Terminal Capacity Context: APM Terminals Elizabeth processes approximately 28% of total container throughput at the Port of New York and New Jersey, supporting over 600 vessel calls and 800,000 drayage truck visits annually.

Executive and Authority Perspectives

Henrik Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth, emphasized that the multi-million-dollar modernization program integrates equipment electrification with comprehensive workforce upskilling alongside labor partners to manage advanced port technology.

Bethann Rooney, Director of the Port Department at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, stated that deploying zero-tailpipe-emission equipment boosts operational efficiency while directly advancing the Port Authority’s long-term sustainability and net-zero decarbonization targets.
