German container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with APM Terminals to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II B.V. at the Port of Rotterdam.
The minority acquisition secures long-term automated terminal capacity for Hapag-Lloyd under its Hanseatic Global Terminals division while supporting the site’s ongoing deep-sea capacity expansion. APM Terminals will retain majority ownership and operational management of the facility.
Network Alignment and Gemini Cooperation Integration
The transaction strengthens the operational foundation for the Gemini Cooperation, the operational alliance between Hapag-Lloyd and A.P. Moller – Maersk:
- Strategic Hub Role: Establishes Maasvlakte II as a primary Northern European transshipment hub within the Gemini Cooperation’s hub-and-spoke network design.
- Capacity Expansion Scope: The ongoing site expansion adds 1,000 meters of deep-sea quay wall—doubling total berth length to 2,000 meters—alongside additional container yard space and four new intermodal rail tracks.
- Terminal Throughput Target: Once fully built out, the automated facility’s annual handling capacity is projected to reach 5.4 million TEUs.
- Automation and Equipment: Integrates additional Automated Terminal Tractors (ATTs) and automated stacking cranes to maintain fast vessel turnarounds for ultra-large container ships.
