Global port operator DP World has deployed 35 Electric Terminal Tractors (ETTs) at Jeddah Islamic Port’s South Container Terminal (SCT).
The deployment expands the terminal’s tractor fleet by more than 20% and forms part of DP World’s $800 million long-term investment program to modernize port infrastructure at one of Saudi Arabia’s primary container gateways.
Decarbonization and Operational Efficiency Gains
The newly added electric units transfer containers between the quayside and storage yards, replacing traditional diesel-powered equipment.
Key impacts of the electrification effort include:
- Carbon Emissions Reduction: Cuts annual CO₂ emissions from the terminal tractor fleet by approximately 20% compared to current operational levels.
- Fleet Expansion: Boosts terminal tractor capacity by over 20%, supporting faster equipment turnaround and higher availability for vessel loading and discharge.
- Target for Full Electrification: Serves as a key milestone toward DP World’s goal of electrifying 100% of its terminal equipment at SCT by 2030.
Aligning with National Logistics Strategy
Mohammad Alshaikh, CEO of DP World KSA, noted that the investment enhances equipment availability and operational resilience while advancing the transformation of SCT into a lower-carbon gateway supporting regional trade.

The terminal upgrade aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiatives aimed at establishing a globally competitive logistics sector.
Terminal Infrastructure Overview
The South Container Terminal covers nearly one million square meters and features 2,150 meters of quay length across five container berths with an 18-meter depth, accommodating ultra-large container vessels.
The introduction of the electric tractors follows the delivery of three semi-automated quay cranes, bringing the facility’s ship-to-shore crane fleet to 17.
