Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, the Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia (WCS Indonesia), and shipping and logistics operator CMA CGM Group convened in Bandar Lampung to present the operational milestones of their tri-partite anti-trafficking initiative.
Following the presentation, delegates visited the Wildlife Detection Dog (WDD) facility in Kalianda, South Lampung, to review frontline canine training operations designed to detect flora and fauna concealed within supply chains.
Established in 2024 by WCS Indonesia alongside local partner Jaringan Satwa Indonesia (JSI), the WDD program supports the Ministry of Forestry’s Directorate of Species and Genetic Conservation (KSG) in identifying and intercepting illegal wildlife shipments moving through major commercial transit hubs.
Key Program Achievements
Since its launch in 2024, the public-private partnership has strengthened national biosecurity and supply chain integrity across several key operational areas:
- Port Vulnerability Assessments: Executing detailed assessments across maritime gateways to identify and seal logistical smuggling loopholes.
- Capacity Building: Training 127 port officials and law enforcement officers across multiple state agencies to improve risk detection and cargo inspection protocols.
- Enforcement Support: Deploying K9 units across 39 joint operations with government agencies, securing 957 animals from illegal trafficking networks.
- Species Protection & Release: Releasing 770 animals back into native habitats, including protected species such as the Sunda pied fantail, Javan leafbird, and changeable hawk-eagle, while mitigating the risk of zoonotic disease transmission.
Public-Private Leadership and Operational Impact
Dr. Ahmad Munawir, Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry, stated that protecting wild plants and animals is a shared legal responsibility requiring integrated, risk-based monitoring. He noted that logistics routes remain critical intervention points that must be continuously fortified against exploitation by illicit trade networks. He added that the strategic combination of K9 deployment, personnel training, and cross-sector collaboration enhances enforcement speed and accuracy, establishing a framework that can be replicated across other high-risk trade hotspots to support long-term biodiversity conservation.
Sofi Mardiah, Senior Manager of the Wildlife Trade and Policy Program at WCS Indonesia, emphasized that protecting wildlife and securing global supply chains go hand in hand. She noted that early detection at the frontline is vital for effective conservation, commending CMA CGM for taking a proactive leadership stance to prevent commercial transport networks from being used for wildlife crime.
Ikram Ghazali, President Director of CMA CGM Indonesia, highlighted that global transport companies bear a responsibility to ensure supply chains act as barriers against illicit activity rather than enablers. He affirmed that partnering with the Ministry of Forestry and WCS Indonesia reflects CMA CGM’s long-term commitment to strengthening safeguards across logistics networks and supporting practical, frontline solutions like the Wildlife Detection Dog program.
