Global ocean carrier Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has expanded its sub-Saharan intermodal service network by integrating the deep-water Port of Kribi into its door-to-door logistics solutions. The strategic integration links maritime trade lanes directly with inland domestic markets in Cameroon and landlocked commercial centers across Chad and the Central African Republic (CAR).
By establishing Kribi as a key intermodal gateway, the container line introduces a complementary alternative to the traditional Port of Douala corridor, smoothing regional cargo distribution as trade volumes expand throughout the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) zone.
Upgrading Sea-to-Land Connectivity
The newly designed logistics network bundles ocean shipping, port terminal handling, and cross-border road freight into a single, coordinated transportation contract. The end-to-end framework links Kribi with several major economic hubs across the region:
- Cameroon: Direct road connections to the capital city of Yaoundé.
- Chad: High-velocity logistics corridors servicing both Moundou and the capital, N’Djamena.
- Central African Republic: Reliable long-haul trucking pipelines directly feeding Bangui.
The operational layout is supported by up to four weekly MSC vessel calls at the Kribi terminal. This includes direct mainline deployments—such as the Africa Express and the India Africa Service (IAS)—positioning the port as a fast, cost-efficient gateway for goods moving between Central Africa and core manufacturing markets across Asia, including China, South Korea, India, and Vietnam.
Leveraging Deep-Water Infrastructure
As Cameroon’s only deep-water port facility, Kribi features a multi-year infrastructure expansion that allows it to comfortably host ultra-large container vessels. The port boasts an annual throughput capacity exceeding 1 million TEUs and is engineered with deep drafts capable of receiving world-class mega-ships.
From the quay, MSC’s localized operational teams manage the entire cross-border transit process. The in-country logistics framework covers documentation processing, localized customs clearance coordination, and real-time telematics tracking to provide cargo owners with full visibility from vessel discharge to final inland delivery.
Next Steps in the Pan-African Intermodal Campaign
The rollout of the Kribi corridor represents the second official installment of MSC’s ongoing African Intermodal Campaign. The corporate initiative follows the successful debut of the Abidjan-to-Ouagadougou rail solution, which optimized logistics flows between Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso earlier this year.
As part of its broader mid-term strategy to reinforce inland logistics infrastructure across the African continent, MSC plans to unveil additional dedicated intermodal corridors throughout Kenya and South Africa later in 2026.
