CMA CGM Zero-Emission Electric Barge Vietnam

The CMA CGM Group, a world leader in shipping and logistics, is developing a brand-new zero-emission inland waterway transport solution in Vietnam. This innovative solution features a 100% electric barge powered by batteries, supported by a charging infrastructure powered by a new solar farm at the Gemalink deep-sea terminal.

The e-barge will transport goods between Binh Duong and Cai Mep, covering a 180 km round trip. This initiative will achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions and avoid an estimated 778 tons of CO2 annually.

CMA CGM is partnering with NIKE, which is committed to utilizing the e-barge to transport NIKE products from Binh Duong Province to Gemalink. This collaboration supports CMA CGM’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and promotes the decarbonization of maritime activity.

“This project reflects our commitment to decarbonizing our operations and providing our customers with sustainable transport solutions,” said a CMA CGM spokesperson. “By partnering with NIKE, we are demonstrating the viability of electric barge transport and contributing to a greener supply chain in Vietnam.”

This initiative reinforces CMA CGM’s commitment to Vietnam and Southeast Asia, contributing to local economic development with stronger and more sustainable supply chains. It also aligns with the company’s broader efforts to reduce its environmental footprint and offer innovative solutions to its customers.
