Global shipping company A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) is gearing up to debut one of the world’s first methanol-enabled vessels in Los Angeles this August. The innovative container ship, powered by green fuel for its maiden voyage, boasts the capability to carry over 16,000 containers (TEU).

The vessel’s naming ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Port of Los Angeles Outer Harbor on Tuesday, August 27. Maersk’s CEO Vincent Clerc, in the presence of esteemed guests from Nike and prominent state and local officials, will christen the cutting-edge vessel. In collaboration with Nike, Maersk aims to drive the decarbonization of supply chains, aligning with Nike’s commitment to sustainability and the advancement of more eco-friendly transportation methods.

Nike’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, Venkatesh Alagirisamy, emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This event is not only an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable engineering achievement, but the chance to highlight that we can navigate towards more sustainable supply chains if we work together.”

Following the ceremony, Maersk will open the doors for public tours of the impressive 350-meter-long vessel on Wednesday, August 28. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore the sailors’ living quarters and even stand on the bridge under the captain’s command. To participate in the public tours, visitors are required to register for free tickets through an online registration site, set to be activated and announced in August.

This event not only marks a significant milestone for Maersk but also exemplifies the company’s ongoing commitment to exploring alternative fuels in its pursuit of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The vessel represents one of the latest advancements in Maersk’s efforts towards sustainability.

With its environmentally friendly approach, the vessel stands as the fifth container ship in Maersk’s fleet that operates on green methanol fuel, with an additional 20 methanol-enabled vessels on order. Maersk’s dedication to innovation is also mirrored in the vessel’s unique design features, including the positioning of crew accommodation and the bridge at the bow, as well as a single funnel at the stern, which collectively enhance container capacity and efficiency during port operations.
