Joint Service by Global Carriers Enhances Cold-Chain Capabilities and Rail Connectivity

PSA Halifax has marked the launch of the AMERIGO service, a new joint operation between CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping, OOCL, and ONE. The service officially commenced with the maiden call of the CMA CGM AMBITION at the PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub Terminal.

The introduction of the AMERIGO service strengthens direct trade links between the Mediterranean and North America, offering expanded options for exporters and importers. The rotation includes key Mediterranean gateways such as Salerno, La Spezia, Genoa, Vado Ligure, Valencia, and Algeciras, alongside major U.S. East Coast ports including New York, Norfolk, Savannah, and Miami.

Enhanced Logistics and Rail Integration

A primary feature of the new service is its integration with PSA Halifax’s expedited rail solutions. Through a partnership with Canadian National Railway (CN), the terminal provides seamless onward access to major inland markets including Montreal, Toronto, and the U.S. Midwest.

The AMERIGO service also reinforces PSA Halifax’s position as a strategic cold-chain gateway. The terminal’s rail solution allows for time-sensitive refrigerated cargo, such as citrus fruit, to be transferred directly from the vessel to rail for same-day departure. This rapid movement is supported by close coordination between PSA Halifax, the Halifax Port Authority, and CN.

Duncan Glass, Managing Director of PSA Halifax, noted that the debut of the service underscores the terminal’s commitment to enhancing global trade flows. He stated that the new service provides customers with more choices, faster transit times, and a reliable network between Southern Europe and Canada.

Sustainable Shipping and Strategic Growth

The inaugural vessel, the CMA CGM AMBITION, is a 7,327 TEU LNG-powered container ship. This vessel belongs to a new generation of environmentally efficient ships designed to support global maritime decarbonization efforts.

Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, welcomed the new service, highlighting that the addition of direct calls in Italy and Spain strengthens the port’s gateway partnership with the Ocean Alliance and ONE. He indicated that the service complements existing South and Southeast Asia routes with a second weekly call, offering new opportunities to diversify and expand Canadian trade.

The expansion reflects the growing importance of Halifax as an Atlantic hub capable of handling large-scale container operations while maintaining low intermodal dwell times.
