Pacific International Lines (PIL) has announced the upcoming launch of its new weekly Ubuntu Express (UBX) service, substantially expanding its maritime footprint between Asia and South Africa. Scheduled to log its maiden voyage from Shanghai on May 28, 2026, the service introduces a high-capacity, direct corridor connecting manufacturing centers in North China, South China, Taiwan, and Singapore with major South African trade gateways.

The new loop is deployed in direct response to an escalating trade demand across the Indo-Pacific corridor, driven by expanding African consumer markets, rising industrial production, and a strong uptick in the movement of manufactured, agricultural, and temperature-sensitive goods.

Direct Port Rotation and Strategic Grid

The UBX service will operate on a fixed weekly schedule utilizing a modern, optimized fleet designed to handle both standard dry freight and refrigerated cargo.

The service establishes a comprehensive port rotation:

Shanghai – Ningbo – Kaohsiung – Shekou – Singapore – Durban – Cape Town – Singapore – Shanghai

By linking premium Asian export hubs like Ningbo and Shekou directly to the commercial entry points of Durban and Cape Town, the loop will offer highly competitive transit times, allowing shippers to bypass multi-leg transshipments and minimize supply chain disruption.

Shared Regional Growth and Community Values

Reflecting its strategic objectives, PIL named the service after the traditional South African philosophy of “Ubuntu”—a concept centered on humanity, community, and mutual interconnectedness. The naming underscores the carrier’s focus on establishing long-term, collaborative customer shipping solutions that support cross-border economic integration and shared growth.

Expanding the African Network Strategy

Mr. William Ho, General Manager of Long-haul Services at PIL, highlighted the carrier’s deep-rooted commitment to the African continent, noting that decades of operational experience have allowed the company to cultivate an incredibly reliable network and stable regional partnerships.

The introduction of the Ubuntu Express loop directly complements PIL’s existing service portfolio, injecting critical capacity to meet the expanding volume requirements of the Asia–South Africa trade lane. By deploying advanced, high-efficiency vessels on this rotation, PIL continues to provide scalable, competitive, and secure end-to-end logistics solutions for global supply chains.
