HMM Pilots Onboard 3D Printing for Vessel Maintenance

HMM has commenced a pilot demonstration of an onboard 3D printing system on its 9,000 TEU containership, ‘HMM GREEN.’ This initiative aims to evaluate the seamless operation of the system under real sailing conditions and assess its potential for procuring maintenance parts for vessels.

The installed ‘3D Printing Digital Workshop’ utilizes metal powder to produce stainless steel components, ensuring sufficient durability for operational use.

If successfully implemented, this system has the potential to significantly reduce the lead times associated with obtaining necessary components. On-demand production of essential parts onboard vessels could allow for timely maintenance, minimizing inventory costs and preventing additional expenses and downtime.

This pilot program is part of HMM’s broader technology development efforts. In September 2023, HMM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several key organizations in the maritime industry, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Energy, Korean Register (KR), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

An HMM official stated, “We are committed to strengthening our competitiveness through the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and active participation in research and development of the maritime sector.”
