Cosco Shipping, one of the world’s leading shipping companies, has launched the largest green car vessel on its maiden voyage to Europe. The vessel, named “Liao He Kou,” along with her sister “Min Jiang Kou,” is breaking records as the world’s largest Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessels, with the capacity to accommodate a staggering 7,500 vehicles on 13 decks, including 4 liftable decks.
Equipped with LNG dual-fuel power and cutting-edge green environmental protection technologies, the vessel is designed to adhere to the stringent TIER III emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization. This innovative design promises significant energy savings and emission reductions during operation. In comparison to traditional fuel oil RoRo vessels, the “Liao He Kou” can achieve approximately 20% energy savings, along with reductions of about 27% in carbon emissions, 30% in nitrogen oxide emissions, 99% in sulfide emissions, and over 90% in PM particulate matter emissions.
On a typical China-Europe round-trip journey, the use of LNG as an alternative fuel is estimated to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 2,100 tons per voyage, equivalent to the absorption of CO₂ by 10,000 adult trees over a span of 20 years.
During the vessel’s loading process at the dock, an array of brand-new commercial vehicles from renowned brands such as BAIC, Liuzhou Motor, BYD, and CHERY were carefully loaded onto the “Liao He Kou” for their passage to Europe.
The cutting-edge features of the new vessels include real-time monitoring and precise positioning of the vehicles throughout the transportation process. This technology provides customers with a visualized experience of the entire automobile logistics supply chain, including real-time monitoring of temperature and vehicle conditions in the cabin, offering high-temperature warnings and ultra-high temperature alarms.
Recognizing the unique challenges posed by the transportation of new energy vehicles, Yuanhai Car Ship and Ship Technology Engineering Co., Ltd. have developed 3-ton special lashing straps for car ships. These innovative straps have been awarded two Chinese patent certificates for “Appearance Design” and “Utility Model,” bridging the gap in this specialized technology and significantly improving operational efficiency while supporting the large-scale export of new energy vehicles.
