A historic milestone in maritime decarbonization was reached on July 25 when COSCO SHIPPING subsidiary SINOBUNKER completed the world’s first green ammonia bunkering operation. The operation took place at the COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry terminal in Dalian, China.
This zero-carbon operation represents a transformational leap for China’s shipping sector, supporting the nation’s carbon neutrality and carbon peaking goals. Unlike conventional marine fuels, green ammonia combustion emits only nitrogen and water, making it a critical solution for slashing vessel emissions.
Closing the Green Energy Loop
This pioneering bunkering provides a replicable technical model for the global shipping industry. The key to its sustainability lies in its production: the green ammonia used was produced entirely with renewable electricity. This successfully closes the loop across the entire value chain, from production via green power and transportation, all the way to bunkering and final use in vessel operations.
The environmental performance and sustainability of this green ammonia product have been highly recognized by international authorities. It not only secured the ISCC Plus certification for international sustainable development and carbon but also became the first green ammonia product globally to receive the renewable ammonia certification from Bureau Veritas, a leading inspection and certification organization.
This operation underscores COSCO SHIPPING’s unwavering commitment to advancing green and low-carbon operations in the maritime sector.
