Shipping Solutions, the marine services division of DP World, has officially named its first methanol dual-fuel container ship, DP World London, during a ceremony in Aarhus, Denmark.
The vessel deployment marks a key operational milestone in modernizing DP World’s shortsea and feeder network with lower-emission tonnage across European trade lanes.
Vessel Specifications and Environmental Engineering
Owned by German shipowner Elbdeich Reederei and operated under the Portugal flag by Shipping Solutions (formerly Unifeeder), the vessel integrates dual-fuel capabilities designed to reduce carbon intensity:
- Capacity and Dimensions: Built in China and delivered in April 2026, the shortsea container vessel measures 148 meters in length with an intake capacity of 1,250 TEUs.
- Propulsion and Emissions Control: Powered by a five-cylinder dual-fuel main engine capable of burning green methanol, supported by an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system to minimize nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions.
- Bunkering Milestone: Completed its initial methanol bunkering operation in Rotterdam on June 25, 2026, executed in partnership with Unibarge and fuel supplier Methanex.
Network Integration and Decarbonization Strategy
The addition of DP World London aligns with broader fleet modernization initiatives across global trade corridors:
- European Feeder Routing: Deployed on DP World’s Northern European shortsea network, connecting regional feeder hubs with major ocean gateways.
- Global Fleet Strategy: Follows the recent expansion of DP World’s coastal fleet in Asia, including the introduction of DP World Indus to Indian coastal trade routes.
Executive Commentary
Martin Gaard Christiansen, CEO of Shipping Solutions EAM at DP World, stated that launching the vessel in Aarhus—where Unifeeder originated in 1977—connects the company’s regional history with its long-term decarbonization strategy.
Ganesh Raj, Global Chief Operating Officer of Marine Services at DP World, noted that investing in dual-fuel feeder assets provides cargo owners with practical, lower-emission transport options while strengthening end-to-end supply chain integration across ports, terminals, and logistics operations.
