Washington United Terminals Inc. (WUT), the U.S. West Coast terminal subsidiary of South Korean ocean carrier HMM, has signed a contract with HD Hyundai Samho for the supply of four new port cranes.
The modernization project is designed to expand cargo throughput, replace aging machinery, and accommodate larger container vessels calling at the Port of Tacoma.
Terminal Infrastructure and Handling Expansion
Opened in 1999, WUT covers approximately 510,000 square meters (126 acres) with a 793-meter berth and an on-dock rail facility capable of handling 26 rail cars simultaneously.
Key metrics and equipment changes for the facility include:
- Capacity Increase: Annual terminal handling capacity will expand by roughly 49%, rising from 590,000 TEUs to 880,000 TEUs.
- Equipment Modifications: WUT currently operates eight quay cranes and six yard cranes. The order will replace two aging quay cranes with new units and add two new yard cranes to the fleet.
- Delivery Terms: HD Hyundai Samho will execute the order on a turnkey basis—covering design, manufacturing, transit, installation, and commissioning—with final delivery scheduled for completion by 2028.
Global Port Strategy and Investment Focus
An HMM official noted that the equipment upgrades at WUT aim to enhance operational resilience and provide efficient logistics services to global shippers alongside the company’s fleet expansion.
The Tacoma investment forms part of HMM’s broader international port network strategy, which includes expanding its TTIA terminal in Algeciras, Spain, and executing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) for new port development in Vadhvan, India.
