Singapore witnessed a significant maritime milestone as A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) officially named its latest dual-fuel methanol container vessel, “A.P. Møller.” This event marks the vessel’s maiden voyage from Asia to Europe and highlights the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable shipping practices.

The naming ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Ms. Chan Su-Shan, wife of the CEO of Temasek Holdings, who served as the vessel’s godmother. The ceremony was hosted by Robert Uggla, Chair of the Board of Directors at A.P. Moller – Maersk, and included attendees such as Mr. Murali Pillai, Minister of State for Law and Transport, and executives from Maersk and local shipping authorities.

In a statement during the event, Mr. Pillai expressed, “Today marks a significant milestone in our journey of decarbonising the maritime industry… the arrival of ‘A.P. Møller’ showcases the advancements in shipping technology and reinforces our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The “A.P. Møller” is the ninth vessel in Maersk’s innovative fleet designed to operate on methanol, joining a series of 18 similar vessels planned for delivery in the coming years. Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea, the vessel boasts a capacity of 16,592 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Seven of these dual-fuel methanol vessels are set to join the fleet as early as 2024.

Ditlev Blicher, President of Asia Pacific at Maersk, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable practices, stating, “This launch showcases our dedication to decarbonisation in the region… We urge the International Maritime Organisation to adopt regulations that close the price gap between fossil and new fuels to encourage more customers to embrace these sustainable options.”

The event also celebrated a recent achievement in Singapore’s maritime sector—the July 2023 inauguration of ship-to-containership methanol bunkering, showcasing Singapore’s ambition to become a key provider of alternative maritime fuels.

Maersk’s delivery of its dual-fuel fleet is a crucial part of the company’s goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. The implementation of lower-emission methanol as a fuel can potentially reduce GHG emissions by at least 65% compared to traditional fossil fuels, further driving the industry’s transition towards greener shipping solutions.
