The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a major terminal operator in Malaysia, has recently made significant strides in expanding its capabilities and services with the procurement of advanced equipment. PTP, a joint venture between the MMC Group and APM Terminals, has entered into an agreement with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC) for the acquisition of five ultra-large container vessel (ULCV) Quay Cranes. This comes on the heels of a previous agreement with Sany Marine Heavy Industry Co Ltd for six ULCV quay cranes.

The agreement, signed by PTP chief executive officer Mark Hardiman and ZPMC vice-president Celilia Shen, emphasizes PTP’s commitment to efficiently manage the increasing volume of containerized cargo at its terminal while strengthening regional trade dynamics.

According to PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh, the acquisition of these advanced cranes is a crucial step in PTP’s ongoing commitment to delivering best-in-class capabilities and services to its customers and stakeholders.

Mark Hardiman highlighted the importance of this purchase, stating that the acquisition of these five ULCV quay cranes symbolizes a significant capacity expansion and upgrade of PTP’s equipment and facilities. He emphasized that these technologically advanced machines would significantly enhance the port’s ability to manage the escalating volume of containerized cargo and facilitate regional trade while upholding the highest safety standards.

Additionally, the acquisition of the new cranes reflects PTP’s dedication to sustainability goals, which align with the Paris Agreement and its commitment to environmentally responsible practices. PTP’s ongoing efforts towards achieving a targeted 45 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030 remain a critical aspect of the port’s sustainability agenda.

PTP is a crucial transhipment hub in Malaysia, with a capacity to handle 13 million twenty-foot equivalent units annually, making it Malaysia’s busiest transhipment hub. The port also holds the 15th rank among the world’s top container ports in throughput terms.
