Taiwanese container shipping company Wan Hai Lines has announced its latest efforts to fulfil its corporate sustainability commitments. The company has subscribed to the first batch of products from the Taiwan Carbon Exchange, obtaining 2,000 tons of carbon credits certified by the international accreditation unit Gold Standard.

In addition to promoting water and economic development projects in developing countries through carbon credits, Wan Hai also offers carbon offset for its Japan-Taiwan route segment. The company invites customers to join environmental conservation efforts and support its initiatives.

Wan Hai’s latest sustainability efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and well-being, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and climate action. The company has selected its flagship route, the JTS Service from Japan to Taiwan, for voluntary carbon offsetting from February 27 to March 12. This initiative aims to create a carbon-offset route service for long-time supporters of Wan Hai.

Wan Hai’s JTS Service is equipped with the latest high-efficiency smart vessels and various energy-saving devices. These devices enhance fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions through data tracking and analysis. The company hopes to plant the seeds of environmental protection through this action and encourages customers to participate in energy-saving and carbon-reduction initiatives.

Wan Hai has always prioritized environmental protection and sustainable operation as integral to its business philosophy. The company is committed to the 2050 net-zero target. It focuses on fleet renewal, investment in energy-efficient engines and equipment, and enhancing fuel efficiency while reducing carbon dioxide emissions through close monitoring and data analysis.

Moreover, Wan Hai has collaborated with Standard Chartered Bank to integrate sustainability performance with ship financing, supporting environmentally friendly financial solutions. The “Wan Hai Planting Tree” project, launched in 2022, centres on tree planting, actively engaging stakeholders through tree planting events, beach cleaning activities, and providing subsidies for green energy equipment to contribute to Taiwan’s ecological environment.

Wan Hai has demonstrated excellence in sustainability ratings and awards, consecutively being selected for the “Common Wealth Sustainability Award Top 100” for two years and receiving the TCSA Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Award. Its sustainability report achieved Gold Level in the first category in the transportation industry.

Wan Hai continues to expand its greenhouse gas inventory scope, holding dual certifications from ISO 14064-1:2018 and GHG Protocol, clearly understanding the company’s carbon emissions status, promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction actions, and enhancing environmental benefits.

Wan Hai anticipates building a more sustainable future through practical actions, and its latest initiatives represent the company’s strong commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
