Yusen Logistics has launched a new cross-border multimodal transportation service (rail and road transportation) utilizing the high-speed rail network between Kunming, China and Vientiane, Laos.

This new cross-border multimodal transportation service utilizes the company’s global network to provide integrated transportation services from collection, customs clearance to final delivery. Yusen’s customers’ shipments will also be tracked via its tracking platform using GPS technology. The company also arranged a trial shipment from Laos to Europe via China in June.

China-Laos Railway is an international high-speed railway between Kunming, China and Vientiane, Laos, which opened in December 2021. Before the railway began operation, road transport was the only land transportation between China and ASEAN countries. This often creates traffic congestion near the China-Laos border and the China-Vietnam border, thus resulting in longer lead times and higher freight costs. As a result, the China-Laos railway has become an important logistics corridor between China and ASEAN countries to realize fulfilling mass transportation services with stable lead times.

The launch of this new service provides Yusen’s customers with an effective countermeasure for their business continuity plan during maritime and road transportation disruptions and a greener solution that can contribute to reducing CO2 emissions through rail transportation. The company aims to expand the multimodal transportation service that efficiently connects major cities in China with ASEAN member states, mainly in the Greater Mekong sub-region, such as Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, where transportation demand is expected to grow further.

Yusen’s mission is to become the world’s preferred supply chain logistics company – applying insight, service quality and innovation to create sustainable growth for business and society. As a partner generating sustainable growth with its customers and as a core company of the NYK Group, which has set ESG as its growth strategy, it will continue providing optimal supply chain logistics services.
