In partnership with Taiwan’s National Park Service, Wan Hai Lines recently organized a tree-planting event at Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park. The event, attended by local customers, suppliers, social welfare organizations, and Wan Hai employees, aimed to bring green vitality to the port city. This initiative aligned with Wan Hai’s commitment to environmental protection and coincided with the Day of the Seafarer, demonstrating the company’s appreciation and care for seafarers.

Environmental protection is one of Wan Hai’s core business principles, and its efforts extend to addressing global warming and Taiwan’s ecological conservation. Since the launch of the “Wan Hai Planting Tree” project in 2022, the company has collaborated with national parks and forestry institutions to plant and maintain over 600,000 trees. This effort has captured 2,760 tons of carbon dioxide annually, contributing significantly to the planet’s sustainable development.

The recent tree-planting event at Kaohsiung Metropolitan Park saw the participation of Wan Hai Chairman Mr Chen Po-Ting, National Park Service Director General Mr Chen Mao-Chun, and Director of the National Natural Park Headquarters Mr Chang Teng-Wen. Together, the participants planted 200 saplings, including Acacia, Cinnamomum, Ironwood, Maple, and Cassia trees, aiming to establish a new ecosystem and raise awareness about the importance of trees.

Looking forward, Wan Hai and the National Park Service plan to plant 5,000 native arbours and shrubs in the park between 2024 and 2028, focusing on increasing carbon sequestration, expanding urban green spaces, and mitigating the urban heat island effect, thereby positively impacting the urban environment of Kaohsiung.

In addition to environmental initiatives, Wan Hai has launched the “Seafarer Carbon Reduction Campaign” to encourage environmentally friendly practices among seafarers. The company is committed to ensuring its seafarers’ physical and mental health and safety by providing various support services, including entertainment facilities, psychological counselling, fatigue testing, and telemedicine services.

Since April 2024, Wan Hai has collaborated with the Telemedicine Center of Taipei Medical University Hospital to provide seafarers with access to video consultations with doctors, enhancing the quality and efficiency of maritime medical consultations.

Wan Hai’s sustainable business principles align with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and various Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting the company’s dedication to environmental protection and employee welfare. Moving forward, Wan Hai will continue to promote energy conservation and carbon reduction, furthering its impact on environmental protection while enhancing care for employees and seafarers.
