Wallenius Wilhelmsen has announced the exercise of options for two additional 11,700 CEU Shaper class vessels at China Merchants Jingling Shipyard Co., Ltd. This decision is part of the company’s strategic plan to enhance its fleet and aligns with its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in shipping.
The two new vessels are included in a set of four previously announced options, with delivery anticipated in the second half of 2028. In addition to these new orders, Wallenius Wilhelmsen is also set to upsize two existing vessels from 9,300 CEU to 11,700 CEU, which will bring the total number of upsized Shaper vessels to eight.
Xavier Leroi, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Shipping Services, emphasized the company’s vision for a sustainable future, stating, “Exercising our options and upsizing further Shaper class vessels fit seamlessly with Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s net-zero ambition. The vessels are prepared for net-zero and future fuels from day one and will reduce fuel consumption and emissions considerably.”
With this latest move, Wallenius Wilhelmsen will have a total of 14 Shaper class vessels on order, comprised of eight 11,700 CEU vessels and six 9,300 CEU vessels. The costs associated with the new optional vessels and the upsize of existing orders will remain consistent with prior agreements for the Shaper class vessels.
This development marks a significant step forward in Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability within the shipping industry.
