In a significant milestone for the shipping industry, Pacific International Lines (PIL) unveiled its first two 14,000 TEU container vessels at a naming ceremony held today at Jiangnan Shipyard. These vessels, Kota Eagle (鹰城) and Kota Emerald (翆城) mark the largest addition to PIL’s fleet and the first to operate entirely on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.

The naming ceremony featured Ms Chan Su-Shan, the wife of Mr Dilhan Pillay, CEO of Temasek Holdings, who named the Kota Eagle, while Mrs Liza Teo, the wife of PIL’s Executive Chairman, Mr S.S. Teo, named the Kota Emerald. The chosen names reflect PIL’s mission to promote environmentally friendly shipping practices.

Once delivered, Kota Eagle and Kota Emerald will service the route from the Far East to Latin America as part of PIL’s West Coast Central and South America Service 2.

“This is a very special and exciting moment for us,” stated Mr S.S. Teo. “This launch represents the first batch of newbuildings following our restructuring, and we are grateful for the support we have received during challenging times.”

Echoing this sentiment, PIL’s CEO, Mr Lars Kastrup, described the event as a joyous occasion. “Taking delivery of these highly efficient LNG dual-fuel vessels is a major milestone in our sustainability journey. They will play a crucial role in reducing our carbon footprint and align with our strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.”

The Kota Eagle and Kota Emerald are the first dual-fuel LNG container vessels commissioned by an Asian shipping line, with an additional 11 dual-fuel ships also on order. These advancements underscore PIL’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing global connectivity to better serve its customers.

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation, the vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, aimed at improving operational efficiency and route management. Enhanced features also include specialized reefer electrical outlets, allowing for increased capacity for refrigerated containers.

In an effort to refresh its brand, PIL announced that the new vessels will feature an energetic red hull, symbolizing the company’s passionate approach to customer-centric solutions. This change will gradually transform the hull colours of all PIL vessels from black to red.

PIL’s commitment to sustainability continues with the ongoing construction of its additional LNG dual-fuel container ships, which include two 14,000 TEU vessels, four 8,000 TEU ships, and five 13,000 TEU vessels, all scheduled for delivery over the coming years.
