Maersk has taken a significant step towards promoting gender equality in the workforce by transforming its Container Freight Station (CFS) warehouse in Ponneri into a women-operated facility. This announcement coincided with the station’s 15th anniversary celebrations and underscores Maersk’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the logistics sector.

The newly revamped 125,000-square-foot warehouse will see an entire shift operated by women, increasing female representation at the CFS from 3% to 13% of the total workforce. Within this transformed facility, women will be engaged in various operational roles, including loading/unloading, security, administration, and forklift operations, with women making up 21% of the workforce.

“This initiative isn’t just about changing our operations; it’s about challenging the status quo and setting new standards in the logistics industry,” said Christopher Cook, Managing Director of Maersk South Asia. He expressed confidence that this initiative will enhance operational performance while creating meaningful job opportunities for women in Chennai’s logistics sector.

The launch builds on the success of Maersk’s first women-operated warehouse in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, which demonstrated improved productivity and operational efficiency. Comprehensive training programs have been established to help women excel in roles that have traditionally been dominated by men, covering key areas such as customs procedures and material handling.

As Maersk celebrates a century of operations in India, the company reaffirms its commitment to the region. Beyond the new warehouse initiative, it also operates a Global Service Centre that employs over 3,000 professionals and collaborates with local institutions like AMET University to train future seafarers.

In a gesture of community support during the anniversary celebrations, Maersk donated laptops to the Government Higher Secondary School in Annupampatu, located near Ponneri, reinforcing its dedication to giving back to the local community.
