A.P. Moller – Maersk has finalized agreements with three shipyards to construct 20 new container vessels, each equipped with advanced dual-fuel engines. This significant order encompasses a total capacity of 300,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) and marks a pivotal step in the company’s fleet renewal strategy, as outlined in their August 2024 update.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, expressed satisfaction with the agreements, stating, “We are pleased to have signed agreements for 20 vessels and thereby completed the acquisition of 300,000 TEU capacity as announced in August. These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and align with our commitment to decarbonization, as all the vessels will operate on lower emissions fuel.”
The newly ordered vessels will feature liquefied gas dual-fuel propulsion systems and range in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU. This size variation will enhance operational flexibility within Maersk’s future network, allowing the company to better meet varied deployment needs. “Once phased in, they will replace existing capacity in our fleet,” added Cristescu.
Delivery of the first vessels is expected in 2028, with the final vessel scheduled for delivery in 2030. Additionally, the company’s August fleet update announced plans to charter a number of methanol and liquefied gas dual-fuel vessels totaling 500,000 TEU capacity. Maersk has now completed charter contracts with several tonnage providers, with these vessels also intended to replace existing capacity within the fleet.
Key details of Maersk’s newbuilding orders include:
- 20 dual-fuel vessels with a total capacity of 300,000 TEU.
- 2 vessels of 9,000 TEU ordered from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, China.
- 12 vessels of 15,000 TEU (6 from Hanwha Ocean, South Korea, and 6 from New Times Shipbuilding, China).
- 6 vessels of 17,000 TEU from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, China.
These investments underscore Maersk’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime sector.
