DP World, a major global logistics company, has made a significant acquisition by obtaining Savan Logistics, the operator of the Savannakhet dry port in the Savannakhet Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Laos. This move not only signifies DP World’s debut in Laos as the country’s first SEZ but also presents a multitude of fresh opportunities for stakeholders, investors, and business partners. With its expertise in managing the dry port since 2016, Savan Logistics will now become part of DP World’s global network, bolstering the company’s capabilities and reach in the Asia Pacific region.
Spanning over 140,456 square meters, the Savannakhet dry port serves as a strategic gateway at the western end of the 1,450 km-long East-West Economic Corridor, which links Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The acquisition of Savan Logistics underscores DP World’s dedication to facilitating the movement of goods along this corridor and its confidence in the region’s potential for growth and development.
In addition to managing the dry port and warehousing services, DP World will oversee cross-border transport, freight forwarding, and integrated logistics solutions. Glen Hilton, CEO & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, DP World, highlighted the strategic significance of this move, emphasizing its importance in enhancing regional connectivity. He also pointed out the dry port’s favourable location in close proximity to DP World’s existing portfolio of ports, terminals, and landside facilities along the East-West Economic Corridor in Thailand and Vietnam.
This expansion into Laos comes at a time when the country’s economy is projected to grow by about 4% in 2024, driven by strategic partnerships and business-friendly policies. Laos’ upcoming chairmanship of the ASEAN summit is expected to further promote international investment and cooperation with neighbouring countries.
This recent development underscores DP World’s commitment to advancing trade in the Asia Pacific region by expanding its presence in key locations. In recent weeks, the company has also announced partnerships with Malaysia’s Sabah Ports Sdn. Bhd and Asian Terminals Inc (ATI) will manage Sapangar Bay Container Port in East Malaysia and Tanza Barge Terminal in the Philippines, respectively.
