Bolloré Logistics Australia demonstrated its expertise and technical capabilities in supporting the mobility market during a recent project with train manufacturer Alstom, where it handled the transportation, loading and unloading of a life-size mock-up train from their supplier in New South Wales to Bolloré Logistics’ warehouse in Melbourne (ME3).
The mock-up is a life-size replica of one and a half carriages of the new X’Trapolis 2.0 train in its current design. The mock-up is being used by Alstom and the Department of Transport and Planning to engage with technical, accessibility and passenger groups to refine the design of the train before they go into manufacturing later this year.
Transportation
The transportation of the mock-up involved organizing escort vehicles for public roads in line with permit requirements. For loading and unloading, our warehouse team managed these operations by using up to four franna cranes, carefully implementing safe lifting procedures stated in engineer drawings to ensure that all safety requirements were met.
This entire cranage and placement operation was handled by the Bolloré Logistics Melbourne team: Bob Zaleski (Project Manager), Charles McNee (Operations Manager ME3 Site) and James Harrison (QHSE Officer). The simultaneous 4-crane lift operation was a spectacular operation to manage, as it required a lot of expertise and meticulousness. Thanks to their precise coordination with Alstom, the transport company and the crane crew, the trains were safely placed at Alstom’s desired location in Bolloré Logistics’ facility.
In addition to these operations, the team also facilitated day-to-day visitors and ensured operational health and safety regulations were strictly complied with.
Utilizing the ME3 warehouse for local stakeholder engagement
Since October 2022, Alstom has been utilizing ME3 to exhibit one half of the the X’Trapolis 2.0 mock-up train. Now that the full mock-up is in place, Alstom is working with the Victorian Government’s Department of Transport to conduct engagement sessions to obtain feedback from a wide range of stakeholders so that they can modify the trains before they go into production. This is a vital step for the multi-year project.
Nadija Peiris, National Commercial Manager – Infrastructure of Bolloré Logistics Melbourne, said, “It is our privilege to host this event at our warehouse as one of the key transport and logistics partners for Alstom’s X’Trapolis 2.0 train project. This project will provide value to the community through employment opportunities and improved infrastructure, as well as further strengthen our relationship with Alstom Australia.”
