ZPMC has introduced its new-generation wind-resistant quay crane at Qingdao Dagang Terminal, strengthening the terminal’s ability to maintain safe and stable operations under challenging weather conditions.
The new crane is designed to withstand sudden wind gusts of up to 58 metres per second during operations, with key performance indicators meeting design expectations. According to ZPMC, the equipment will also support an increase in the terminal’s annual handling capacity to more than one million TEUs.
Designed for Greater Wind Resistance
The crane incorporates several structural innovations aimed at reducing wind load and improving operational stability.
These include elliptical columns, a streamlined portal frame and what ZPMC describes as the industry’s first semi-circular main beam design. The machinery house has also been redesigned with an octagonal structure to reduce both wind exposure and overall equipment weight.
Together, these features reduce wind load to approximately 80% of that experienced by conventional crane designs.
Enhancing Safety in Severe Weather
The crane is also equipped with ZPMC’s customised multi-level WindGuard Safety System, which combines several braking and protection technologies.

The system integrates motor braking, rail clamps and anti-climbing devices to provide additional protection and help maintain crane stability during severe weather conditions.
Supporting Future Port Operations
ZPMC said the new-generation crane was developed in response to increasingly complex operating environments at ports worldwide.
By combining improved wind resistance, structural optimisation and enhanced safety systems, the company aims to provide terminal operators with equipment that can support safer, more reliable and more efficient container handling operations.
