Nippon Express Logistics (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (NX Logistics Thailand), a subsidiary of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., participated in a cross-border rail demonstration test between Thailand and Laos organized by Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight). A official departure ceremony took place at Chonburi Station in Thailand on June 16.
Strengthening Regional Rail Infrastructure
Southeast Asia continues to advance stable, efficient international transport networks to support expanding manufacturing hubs and cross-border trade flows. As a primary manufacturing base in the region, Thailand plays a pivotal role in regional supply chains by enhancing infrastructure connecting industrial zones, sea ports, and border crossings.
Recent investments in rail infrastructure—including double-tracking projects, route extensions, and freight terminal developments—have raised expectations for rail freight as a low-carbon transport mode that diversifies supply chain options. However, rail freight in Thailand faces operational hurdles due to complex regulatory procedures and administrative rules. Practical trials remain essential to evaluate feasibility and streamline operational frameworks for commercial adoption.

Demonstration Test Scope and Data Collection
The trial operated using scheduled freight trains managed by the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), executing a round-trip route between Chonburi Station in Thailand and Thanaleng Dry Port Station in Laos—covering a distance of approximately 650 kilometers.
The test utilized containers sourced from three Japanese freight forwarders, including an NX Group-owned unit loaded with 16 steel pallets equipped with automated data loggers. The sensors recorded real-time physical transport conditions, including vibration and shock levels.
Key evaluation parameters for the trial include:
- Customs clearance processes and documentation
- Transport quality and vibration monitoring
- Total transit lead times and cost structures
- Regulatory schemes and rail transport documentation
By participating in the trial, NX Logistics Thailand aims to support JR Freight’s evaluation of rail freight services in Southeast Asia while expanding sustainable multimodal logistics solutions for regional shippers.
